INCLUSIVE AND INNOVATIVE DIGITAL EDUCATION FOR MIGRANT COMMUNITY IN KENYA & SOMALIA (IIDEMIC)

Mogadishu University is thrilled to announce the launch of a groundbreaking educational initiative: the INCLUSIVE AND INNOVATIVE DIGITAL EDUCATION FOR MIGRANT COMMUNITY IN KENYA AND SOMALIA (IIDEMIC). This transformative project has received substantial multi-country, cross-regional funding from the European Union through the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). The project’s timeline extends over a period of three years, starting from January 1st, 2024.

IIDEMIC aims to revolutionize the educational landscape for migrants and refugees in Kenya and Somalia. This project is committed to enhancing employability by focusing on soft skills development, integrating 21st-century skills, and harnessing innovative digital tools in teaching practices.

Key objectives of IIDEMIC project include the development of a lifelong learning platform accessible to refugees and migrants, the creation of an inclusive education program, and the enhancement of soft skill competencies among Somali refugees in Kenya and Somalia.

To address the diverse needs of the migrant and refugee population, training modules will be developed covering Contemporary Instructional Methods for Teaching Adult Learners, Adaptive Instructional Resources, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, Entrepreneurship, Digital and Assistive Technology Learning Tools, Inclusive Education for Migrants & Refugees, Basic Health Education, Maternal and Child Health & Promotion, Guidance & Counselling – Reintegration and Cultural Diversity, Democracy & Translanguaging. These modules will have both short-term and long-term impacts, improving the quality of education and nurturing skilled graduates and professionals.

In addition to Mogadishu University, the IIDEMIC project brings together esteemed collaborators such as Kenyatta University (Kenya), Kutahya Dumlupinar Universitesi (Turkiye), Uniwersytet WSB Merito W Poznaniu (Poland), Red Sea University (Somalia) and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Kenya).

Kick-off Meeting for the PURSUE Project

Mogadishu University is honored to be part of the Promoting Sustainable, Affordable Housing Construction Technologies Using Environmentally Sound Locally Available Resources (PURSUE) Project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ CBHE program. The project’s Kick-off Meeting took place from February 17–21, 2025, at the Dar Es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) in Tanzania, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss the project’s objectives, implementation strategies, management plans, and long-term impact. PURSUE is a collaborative effort of eight partner universities from Somalia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Turkey, and Portugal. The project aims to develop innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective housing technologies by leveraging environmentally friendly, locally available materials. By enhancing technical skills, strengthening university infrastructure, and fosteringresearch in Civil Engineering, PURSUE seeks to address critical challenges in affordable housing while promoting sustainable development. Mogadishu University is committed to actively contributing to this transformative initiative, engaging in knowledge exchange, research collaborations, and capacity building to equip staff and students with essential skills and expertise for the future. Mogadishu University co-organizes a high-level conference on digital and innovative education in Kenya

Mogadishu University co-organized a high-level conference focused on digital and innovative education for migrant and internally displaced persons (IDPs) communities. Held in Mombasa, Kenya, this conference was part of the Inclusive and Innovative Digital Education for Migrant Communities in Kenya and Somalia (IIDEMIC) Project. This initiative is collaboratively implemented by six universities from Somalia, Kenya, Turkey, and Poland, and is co-funded by ERASMUS+ CBHE. The IIDEMIC Project aims to equip teachers in migrant communities with essential 21st -century soft skills to enhance their entrepreneurial competencies. In addition to the participating universities, the conference gathered prominent academics, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss, strategize, and evaluate advancements in educational initiatives for migrant communities. Representatives from the Ministry of Education and Research in Kenya, the Ministry of Interior, and various organizations shared valuable insights on policies, educational services, and sustainability in refugee education.

Mogadishu University in China

Our Vice President for Relations and Development, Mohamed Ali Omar, attended the Annual Conference of China-Africa Consortium of Universities Exchange Mechanism in Beijing, China. The conference centered on China – Africa higher education cooperation and development in the digital age. The conference brought together university leaders from both China and Africa to promote collaboration in higher education. During this event, the Vice President engaged with prestigious institutions, fostering opportunities for academic and research partnerships that would benefit Our university and its relationships with universities across Africa and China. As part of his efforts to establish fruitful academic collaborations, the Vice President signed a collaborative agreement with Qilu University of Technology. This agreement aims to strengthen academic ties and facilitate exchange programs between the two institutions, furthering the internationalization of Mogadishu University​.
